What Happens When Jesus is in the House

What do we absolutely need to Worship? … a building? … soft pews? … a sound system? … a projector? … a piano / keyboard? … a pulpit? … a music leader? … a preacher? … an offering plate?
What do we really need to worship?

ALL WE REALLY NEED TO TRULY WORSHIP IS JESUS!

What happens when Jesus is in the House?

Mark 2:1-12 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."  6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 "Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" 8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, "Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . . ." He said to the paralytic, 11 "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home."  12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"

What Happens when Jesus is in the House?

WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE…
I.          People Come to see Jesus

V.1-2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door.

a. When Jesus is in the house, people will come to be near Jesus!

b. When Jesus began His earthly ministry, people came from miles around to be near Jesus!

c. They would leave their work, their families their homes, their friends all to come be near Jesus.

d. Many came because they wanted something from Him.

e. But they came

Ps 42:4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude , leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

f.   When Jesus is in the house, people will come to see Jesus!

WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE…
II.       The Word is Preached.

There was a butcher who ran a little shop on the edge of London. He decided one Sunday that he would go into town and hear the great preacher, Charles Spurgeon. His wife chose not to go with him. So the butcher went to town, went to church, and returned home. That afternoon his wife began to question him about the service. "What songs did they sing?" He said, "I do not remember." "Well, what was his text?" Again he said, "I do not remember." Somewhat exasperated, his wife wanted to know: "What good did it do for you to go to church this morning?" The butcher was quiet for a moment. And then he said, "What good? I will tell you what good. You know those scales out in the shop that really weigh just 14 ounces to the pound? Well, before we open for business in the morning, I am going to correct those scales to where they weight a full 16 ounces to the pound."

V.2  he preached the word to them.

a. When Jesus was in the house, the Word was in the house

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

b. I deliver to you that which I received.

Matt 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations,

c. Jesus came into the house for one reason … TO TELL HIS STORY! … the Gospel Message of salvation through faith in Him!

WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE…
III.    Faith is Persistent

Michael Faraday, the great scientist, was taken ill.  When it became evident that the sickness would soon result in his death, a group of fellow scientists came to see him--not so much to talk about science as to talk about death. One of them said to him:  "Mr. Faraday, what are your speculations about your future?"  With evident surprise to them he replied: "Speculations!  I have none.  I am resting on certainities."  Then he quoted

2 Tim. 1:12:  "For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

V. 3-4 Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.

a. Baptist would have gone home.

b. These men would not take NO for an answer

c. Most of you were first invited to come to church by a friend. In fact, 97% of first time attendees come because someone, a friend, invited them. (brought them)

d. His friends saw his need and did whatever they could to help him.

1 Tim 4:9-10 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance 10(and for this we labor and strive ), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.

WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE…
IV.    Forgiveness was present

V.5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

a. What is the greatest miracle that God has ever performed? … Forgiveness is greatest miracle God can perform!

b. As a group, people won’t come to church to see a child they don’t know accept Christ … but they will come if you tell them a man will get up out of a wheelchair and walk!

c. Forgiveness is our greatest need!

d. Forgiveness cost the greatest price.

e. Forgiveness brings the greatest results

Col 1:21-22 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.

5 -“son, your sins are forgiven”

f.   Son =  family

g. Forgiven = fellowship of God

Jer 31:34 "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

A man in England who was troubled with guilt, He was resting behind a hedge and overheard two girls talking.  They were discussing a sermon they had heard. One of the girls said, "I heard him preach once, and I shall never forget one thing that he said.  It gave me a big lift." The other girl asked what the preacher said, and the girl replied, "The world will always say, You made your bed and you must lie in it'; but One greater than the world has said, "Take up thy bed and walk.  Thy sins are forgiven.'" The despairing man on the other side of the hedge heard that good report, the discouragement lifted, and he went on his way rejoicing.

WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE…
V.        Doubt is on the prowl

V. 6-7  Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 "Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

a. Scribes … Sanhedrin … these are the “Old Church” people. They believed that
Sin = suffering. If you were suffering, it was because you sinned and had not gotten right about your sin.

b. Remember Job’s friends that told him …

Job 4:7 "Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?

c. When Jesus said, “Your sins are forgiven, the scribes were upset because on ly God could forgive sins and they didn’t believe Jesus was God!

d. Which is easier? To forgive sin or to heal?

e. Forgiveness = metamorphosis … transformation

WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE…
VI.    Deity is Proven

V. 10 …He said to the paralytic, 11 "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home."  12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"

When Jesus forgave the man’s sin, the scribes were skeptical … when he healed the man and he got up and walked … their fears were proven to be the truth …JESUS IS GOD!!

a. Jesus is either Lord or He’s crazy!

b. Present with Jesus is the power to forgive our sins!

c. There is a road from earth to HELL. There is a road from earth to HEAVEN. There is not a road from hell to heaven or from heaven to hell!

d. If you were saved in a church service, you went to church on a road headed to hell and you left church on a road headed to Heaven.

Acts 7:49-50 "'Heaven is my throne , and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? 50 Has not my hand made all these things?'

A man came home from church one Sunday. He ate lunch and then sat down in his easy chair all tired.  He got his Sunday newspaper and he started to read it.  He had had a long hard week and he was totally exhausted.  He just wanted to sit down and relax.  He just wanted everyone to leave him alone. His little five year old girl came running into the room.   She ran up to him and said, "Daddy, please come and play with me!"  He said, "Honey, not right now.   Daddy's tired from working all week. Let me just sit hear and read the newspaper."  Her response was, "Please come and play with me, Daddy."  He realized he had to think of some-thing so he grabbed a paper he had gotten at church.  Tore it up into many small pieces and said to his little girl,  "Honey, take this into your room.  If you can put the pieces back together in the right place again Daddy will play with you." She said OK."  And off she went.  He thought to himself, "I've got it made now.  I will take her hours to put that back together." Ten minutes later she came running back into the room.  She had taken the scotch tape and put every piece right back where it belonged.  The Father thought to himself,  "Even I couldn't have done it that fast."  He said, "Your Mom helped you right?"  The little girl replied, "No one helped me.  I did it all by myself." He said, "Well, how in the world did you do it?"  He held it up and said, "How did you do that so fast?"  She said, "Look Daddy," and turned the paper around.  "There's a picture of Jesus on the other side.  When I got Jesus in the right place all the other pieces just fit."

WHEN JESUS IS IN THE HOUSE…
VII. God is Praised

V. 12 This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"

b. Healing allowed the man to walk home

c. Forgiveness allowed the man to walk into Heaven!

2 Cor 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
